# Strategic alliances

Also known as: strategic alliance

In short

A strategic alliance is a formal cooperation between two or more independent companies that combine strengths to reach a shared goal, such as entering a market, co-selling, or building a joint offering. Neither company merges or gives up ownership.

In B2B go-to-market, alliances usually pair complementary products that serve the same buyer. The aim is to reach customers, credibility, or capabilities that would be slow or costly to build alone.

## Common types of strategic alliances

* **Technology alliance:** Two products integrate and are promoted together, so each fills a gap in the other.
* **Co-selling alliance:** Sales teams share accounts, introductions, and sometimes joint deals.
* **Co-marketing alliance:** Partners run webinars, content, or events to reach each other’s audiences.
* **Distribution alliance:** One company sells or bundles the other’s product in a region or segment.

## Alliance vs. channel partnership

A channel partner mainly resells or refers your product for a margin. A strategic alliance is broader and more mutual: both sides invest in a shared outcome, and the value is not only commission. Many alliances include no resale at all.

## How to build an alliance that works

### 1. Pick a partner with the same buyer

Look for companies that sell to your ICP but solve a different problem. Overlap in customers with no overlap in product is the ideal pattern.

### 2. Define one shared goal

Write down what success looks like for both sides, for example a set number of joint pipeline opportunities in two quarters. Vague goals lead to quiet alliances.

### 3. Assign owners and a cadence

Name one owner per company and meet on a fixed schedule to review shared accounts and results.

### 4. Make it easy for reps

Give field teams a short pitch, an introduction template, and a rule for who owns the opportunity.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Signing without a plan:** An announcement is not an alliance. Without joint activity, it is a logo swap.
* **Unequal effort:** If one side does all the work, the alliance fades.
* **No deal rules:** Without clear credit and conflict rules, reps stop sharing accounts.

## Strategic alliances FAQs

**What is a strategic alliance in business?**

A strategic alliance is a formal agreement in which two or more independent companies cooperate toward shared goals, such as joint selling, integrations, or market entry, while remaining separate legal entities and keeping their own ownership and brands.

**What is an example of a strategic alliance in B2B SaaS?**

A common example is a technology alliance where two software products integrate and are marketed together. A CRM and an email tool might co-host webinars, list each other in marketplaces, and refer qualified leads to one another.

**How is a strategic alliance different from a joint venture?**

In a strategic alliance, companies cooperate while staying fully independent and no new entity is created. In a joint venture, the partners form a separate company, share ownership of it, and share its profits, losses, and control.

**How do you measure the success of a strategic alliance?**

Track outcomes tied to the shared goal: pipeline and revenue influenced by the partner, joint opportunities created, integration adoption, and lead quality. Review these on a fixed cadence and compare against the targets both sides agreed at the start.
