[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) TAM segmentation Market & Targeting # TAM segmentation In short TAM segmentation is the practice of splitting your total addressable market into distinct groups that share traits, then comparing those groups on size, fit, and reachability. The aim is prioritization. A single market number hides the fact that some segments are easy to win and others are not. Segmentation shows where to start. It differs from TAM mapping, which lists the individual accounts, and from account segmentation, which groups accounts you already hold in your CRM. ## Ways to segment a TAM * **Industry:** Vertical-specific problems and language. * **Company size:** Headcount or revenue bands, which affect deal size and sales motion. * **Region:** Language, regulation, and time zone. * **Use case:** The job the customer wants done. * **Tech stack:** Tools that make adoption easier or harder. * **Maturity:** Early-stage versus established companies. --- ## How to segment and rank ### 1. Choose two or three dimensions More than that creates dozens of tiny segments that are hard to act on. ### 2. Size each segment Count ICP-fit accounts and multiply by expected contract value for each group. ### 3. Score each on fit and access Rate how well your product solves the segment’s problem, how competitive it is, and whether you can reach buyers. ### 4. Pick a beachhead Choose one or two segments to focus on first, and defer the rest. --- ## Example Say a team splits its market by industry and size. Fintech companies with 100 to 500 employees are a smaller group, but the team already has three references there and a faster sales cycle. Healthcare is larger but needs compliance work. The team starts with fintech and revisits healthcare next year. --- ## Common mistakes * **Segmenting by what is easy to filter:** Pick traits that predict need and win rate, not just ones a database offers. * **Equal effort everywhere:** Spreading evenly means no segment gets enough attention. * **Overlapping segments:** Make groups mutually exclusive so accounts are not counted twice. * **No review:** Revisit segments as results come in. --- ## TAM segmentation FAQs **What is TAM segmentation?** TAM segmentation splits your total addressable market into groups that share traits such as industry, company size, region, or use case. Comparing the groups on size, fit, and reachability helps you decide which to pursue first. **How do you segment a total addressable market?** Choose two or three dimensions such as industry and company size, count ICP-fit accounts in each group, estimate revenue potential, score each on fit and access, then pick one or two segments to focus on first. **What is the difference between TAM segmentation and account segmentation?** TAM segmentation divides the whole potential market, including companies you have never contacted. Account segmentation groups accounts already in your CRM or pipeline. The first guides where to expand; the second guides how to treat accounts you hold. **Why is segmenting your TAM important?** A single TAM figure hides large differences between groups. Segmentation shows which parts are biggest, easiest to win, and best suited to your product, so you can focus your limited budget and team time where results are likeliest.
