Market & Targeting

# Target audience

In short

A target audience is the group of people you aim your messaging, content, and outreach at. It is defined by who they are (role, seniority, industry), what they need, and where they pay attention.

In B2B, the audience is people, not companies. It sits inside your target market and usually maps to a few buyer personas, such as the economic buyer, the day-to-day user, and the technical evaluator.

## What defines a B2B target audience

* **Role and seniority:** Job titles, functions, and levels that own the problem or the budget.
* **Pain points:** The specific problems they want solved, in their own words.
* **Channels:** Where they read, listen, and respond: LinkedIn, email, communities, events, or podcasts.
* **Buying role:** Whether they decide, influence, use, or block the purchase.

## Target audience vs. target market

Target market is the set of companies you sell to. Target audience is the set of people inside those companies you speak to. A market of mid-sized logistics firms might contain three audiences: operations leaders, finance approvers, and IT reviewers, each needing different messages.

---

## How to define your target audience

### 1. Start from closed-won deals

List the contacts who were involved in your best deals. Note titles, who started the conversation, and who signed.

### 2. Interview and read call notes

Capture the phrases buyers use to describe the problem. These become your headlines and subject lines.

### 3. Group into a few audiences

Aim for two to four groups. More than that usually means the segments are not really distinct.

### 4. Map each audience to a message and channel

Say a team sells to operations leaders and finance approvers. Operations gets workflow-focused emails and community content; finance gets cost and risk framing in a short business case.

---

## Common mistakes

* **One message for everyone:** A single pitch rarely fits both a user and an approver.
* **Demographics only:** Titles alone miss motivation. Include the problem and the trigger that makes them act.
* **Ignoring the committee:** B2B deals involve several people, so a single-audience plan leaves gaps.

## Target audience FAQs

**What is a target audience in B2B marketing?**

A B2B target audience is the specific group of people you want to reach, such as heads of operations or revenue leaders. It is defined by role, needs, and behavior, and sits inside the companies you have chosen as your target market.

**What is the difference between a target audience and a target market?**

A target market is the group of companies you sell to. A target audience is the group of people within those companies you communicate with. One market often contains several audiences with different roles, concerns, and preferred channels.

**How do you identify your target audience?**

Review closed-won deals to see which contacts engaged, interview customers about the problem that triggered the purchase, group the roles into a few distinct audiences, and test messages by channel. Keep what gets replies and drop what does not.

**How many target audiences should a B2B company have?**

Most teams do well with two to four audiences, usually the decision maker, the user, and a technical or financial reviewer. If you need many more, the groups probably overlap and can be merged.
