[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Tech stack data Data & Enrichment # Tech stack data Also known as: tech stack database In short Tech stack data is information about the software, platforms, and infrastructure a company uses, such as its CRM, marketing automation tool, cloud host, or ecommerce platform. It is stored as fields on an account record, for example "uses Shopify" or "uses a data warehouse." Teams use it to find companies that match their ideal customer profile, to see which tools they need to integrate with, and to personalize messaging. This page focuses on the data itself; technographic data is the wider category it belongs to. ## What tech stack data typically includes * **Tool or product name:** The specific technology detected. * **Category:** For example CRM, analytics, payments, or hosting. * **Detection signals:** Where it was seen, such as website code, job postings, or DNS records. * **Recency:** When it was last confirmed. Stacks change. --- ## How it is collected Back-end tools are harder to see from outside, so coverage differs by category. Treat results as strong hints rather than certainties. * **Website scanning:** Detecting scripts, tags, and cookies that reveal front-end tools. * **Job postings:** Roles asking for experience with a specific tool. * **DNS and email records:** Hints about email, security, and hosting services. * **Surveys and self-reported data:** Accurate but slow to gather. --- ## How GTM teams use it Say a vendor sells an integration-heavy tool for Salesforce users. It filters its target list to accounts that use Salesforce, then opens outreach with how the product works with that CRM. * **Segmentation:** Build target account lists by tool usage. * **Qualification:** Exclude accounts that lack a required system. * **Competitive displacement:** Find accounts using an alternative product, and time outreach to renewal windows when known. * **Personalization:** Reference the tools a prospect already uses. --- ## Common mistakes * **Assuming stale data is current:** A tool detected two years ago may be gone. Check recency. * **Over-personalizing:** Writing "I saw you use X" can feel invasive when the point is not relevant. * **Using it alone:** A tool match shows fit, not timing. Pair it with intent or trigger signals. --- ## Tech stack data FAQs **What is tech stack data?** Tech stack data is information about which software, platforms, and infrastructure a company uses, such as its CRM, email platform, or cloud provider. Sales and marketing teams use it to segment accounts, judge fit, and tailor outreach. **How is tech stack data collected?** Providers collect it by scanning websites for scripts and tags, reading job postings that mention tools, checking DNS and email records, and sometimes using surveys. Back-end tools are harder to detect, so coverage and accuracy vary by technology category. **What is the difference between tech stack data and technographic data?** Tech stack data is the specific list of tools a company uses. Technographic data is the broader category and can also include how long tools have been in use, adoption changes, and spend or usage depth. In practice many people use the terms interchangeably. **How can sales teams use a prospect's tech stack?** Reps can filter lists to companies using a required or complementary tool, skip accounts that lack a prerequisite, and tailor messaging around integrations or replacements. It works best combined with a timing signal, since tool use shows fit but not intent to buy.
