Market & Targeting

# Territory management

In short

Territory management is the continuous process of running a sales territory structure: assigning accounts to reps, tracking coverage and performance, and adjusting as the market and team change.

It differs from territory planning, which sets the design up front, and from carving, which does the dividing. Management is what happens every week after the plan is in place.

## What territory management covers

* **Assignment:** Routing new accounts and leads to the right owner automatically.
* **Coverage:** Checking that every fit account has an owner and is being worked.
* **Performance:** Comparing pipeline, activity, and win rates across territories.
* **Change handling:** Reassigning accounts when reps leave, join, or get promoted.

---

## A simple operating rhythm

### Weekly

Resolve unowned and disputed accounts. Review newly created accounts for correct routing.

### Monthly

Look at coverage gaps: fit accounts with no activity in the last 60 or 90 days. Say a rep has 40 tier 1 accounts but has touched only 10; that is a coverage problem to fix, not a reason to add accounts.

### Quarterly

Compare territory potential with results. Adjust assignments or targets where a territory is clearly over or under-resourced.

---

## Tools and data you need

* A clean account database with parent-child relationships and deduplicated records.
* Routing rules in the CRM that reflect the territory logic.
* Fit and tier fields so territories can be balanced on quality, not count.
* Reporting by territory for pipeline, activity, and conversion.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Manual spreadsheets:** They drift from the CRM and cause ownership conflicts.
* **No owner for rules:** Without a RevOps owner, exceptions pile up.
* **Judging reps on unequal territories:** Performance comparisons mean little if potential differs widely.

## Territory management FAQs

**What is territory management in sales?**

Territory management is the ongoing work of assigning accounts to reps, monitoring coverage and results, and adjusting territories as the team and market change. It keeps ownership clear and makes sure fit accounts are actually being worked.

**What does a territory manager do?**

A territory manager, or a RevOps owner in many teams, maintains assignment rules, resolves ownership disputes, monitors coverage and performance by territory, and recommends changes when reps leave or when territories become unbalanced.

**How is territory management different from territory planning?**

Planning is the up-front design: sizing the market, choosing a coverage model, and setting targets. Management is the continuing operation of that design, including routing, monitoring coverage, and handling changes through the year.

**How do you know a territory is unbalanced?**

Compare the number and quality of fit accounts, open pipeline, and capacity across reps. If one rep has far more high-fit accounts than they can work, or another has too few to hit target, the territories are unbalanced.
