[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Total contract value (TCV) GTM Strategy & SaaS Metrics # Total contract value (TCV) Also known as: TCV In short Total contract value (TCV) is the total revenue a contract is worth over its full term, including recurring fees, one-time fees such as onboarding or implementation, and any other committed charges. TCV answers "how big is this deal in total?" It differs from annual contract value (ACV), which spreads recurring revenue over one year, and from annual recurring revenue (ARR), which counts only recurring amounts. ## How to calculate TCV Add all committed charges across the term. Say a customer signs a three-year contract at a set annual subscription fee plus a one-time onboarding fee. TCV is three years of subscription plus the onboarding fee. * **Include:** Subscription fees, setup or implementation fees, and committed services. * **Exclude:** Uncommitted usage overages, optional renewals, and discretionary add-ons not in the signed contract. --- ## TCV vs. ACV vs. ARR * **TCV:** Total committed value over the whole term, recurring and one-time. * **ACV:** Average yearly value of the contract, usually recurring only. * **ARR:** The yearly recurring revenue run rate across all customers. --- ## Why TCV matters to GTM teams * **Bookings:** Many companies report new bookings at TCV, and it often feeds quota credit. * **Deal comparison:** A one-year and a three-year deal at the same yearly price have different TCV, which shows the value of longer commitments. * **Cash planning:** It shows how much revenue is contractually committed, though not when cash arrives. --- ## Common mistakes * **Treating TCV as ARR:** A large multi-year TCV can hide a small yearly recurring figure. Report both. * **Paying reps on TCV only:** It can push reps to trade steep discounts for longer terms. * **Ignoring termination clauses:** If a customer can exit early, committed value is lower than the headline TCV. * **Mixing definitions:** Agree on whether one-time fees and services count, and apply the rule the same way across all deals. --- ## Total contract value (TCV) FAQs **What is total contract value (TCV)?** Total contract value is the full amount a customer is contractually committed to pay over the entire contract term, including recurring subscription fees and one-time charges such as onboarding or implementation services. **How do you calculate total contract value?** Add every committed charge over the contract term. For a subscription, multiply the recurring fee by the number of billing periods, then add one-time fees. Exclude uncommitted items such as optional renewals or variable usage overages. **What is the difference between TCV and ACV?** TCV is the whole value of a contract over its full term, including one-time fees. ACV is the average value per year, usually limited to recurring revenue. A three-year deal has a TCV roughly three times its ACV, plus any one-time fees. **Is total contract value the same as annual recurring revenue?** No. TCV covers the entire committed term and can include one-time fees. Annual recurring revenue measures only the yearly recurring portion across customers. A big multi-year contract can have a high TCV but a modest ARR contribution.
