# Unique visitor

In short

A unique visitor is one person or device counted once during a set period, no matter how many times it visits your site. Analytics tools usually identify it with a cookie or device identifier.

Unique visitors measure the size of your audience. Sessions and pageviews measure activity. A single visitor who returns five times is one unique visitor but five sessions.

## How unique visitors are counted

Most tools assign a cookie to a browser and count it once per period. This has limits worth knowing.

* **Multiple devices:** The same person on a laptop and a phone often counts as two.
* **Cleared cookies:** A person who clears cookies or uses private browsing may be counted again.
* **Consent and blockers:** Visitors who decline tracking or use blockers may not be counted at all.
* **Different tools differ:** Platforms define the term and the window differently, so numbers rarely match.

---

## Unique visitors vs. sessions vs. pageviews

* **Unique visitors:** How many different people came.
* **Sessions:** How many visits they made.
* **Pageviews:** How many pages were loaded in total.

---

## Why unique visitors matter for GTM

Unique visitors show whether campaigns reach new people. If sessions grow but unique visitors do not, you may be getting more repeat traffic instead of new audience. Pair the number with conversion rate to see whether traffic turns into leads.

---

## An example

Say a blog reports 10,000 sessions in a month and 6,000 unique visitors. That implies many people return. If a new campaign lifts sessions to 12,000 but unique visitors stay near 6,000, the campaign is bringing people back more than reaching new ones.

---

## How to use the metric well

* **Segment it:** Break unique visitors out by source, page, and company where possible.
* **Track it over time:** Use consistent periods, such as weekly or monthly.
* **Tie it to outcomes:** Compare with demo requests, signups, or pipeline.
* **Look for account-level view:** In B2B, many individuals from one target company matter more than a raw count.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Treating it as people count:** It counts browsers and devices, which is an estimate.
* **Comparing across tools:** Definitions differ.
* **Chasing traffic:** More unique visitors from the wrong audience do not produce revenue.

## Unique visitor FAQs

**What is a unique visitor?**

A unique visitor is a single person or device counted once in a reporting period, no matter how many times they visit your website. It measures audience size and is typically identified through a cookie or device identifier in an analytics tool.

**What is the difference between a unique visitor and a session?**

A unique visitor is one person counted once in a period. A session is one visit, and one person can create many sessions. If a visitor returns five times in a month, that is one unique visitor and five sessions.

**How are unique visitors tracked?**

Analytics tools usually place a cookie or use a device identifier to recognize a browser and count it once per period. Accuracy is limited by multiple devices, cleared cookies, blockers, and consent choices, so treat the figure as an estimate.

**Why do unique visitor numbers differ between analytics tools?**

Tools define the term, the time window, and the identification method differently, and they handle consent, bots, and blockers in different ways. For that reason, compare trends inside one tool instead of expecting two tools to match.
