# Upselling

In short

Upselling is the practice of encouraging a customer to move to a more expensive or more capable version of a product they already have or are about to buy. Examples include a higher plan tier, more seats, or an added premium feature.

It grows revenue from existing customers without the cost of winning a new logo. It works best when the higher tier solves a problem the customer has already shown they face.

## Upselling vs. cross-selling

Upselling sells more of, or a better version of, the same product. Cross-selling sells a different, complementary product. Moving a customer from a basic plan to a pro plan is an upsell; adding a separate analytics product is a cross-sell.

---

## When to upsell

* **Usage limits:** The customer is near or over their seats, credits, or storage cap.
* **Feature demand:** They ask for or try a capability that exists only in a higher tier.
* **Growth events:** A hiring wave, a new team, or a new region creates new needs.
* **Success milestones:** They reached the outcome they bought for and are ready for the next goal.

---

## How to upsell without pushing

* **Tie it to their goal:** Show how the higher tier moves a result they already track.
* **Use their data:** Point to actual usage rather than generic pitches.
* **Time it well:** Raise it after a visible win, not during an open support issue.
* **Make the next step small:** Offer a trial of the higher tier or a short review call.

---

## Example

Say a customer on a starter plan keeps hitting the monthly export limit. Their customer success manager notes it, shares how much time the team lost, and shows what the next plan includes. The conversation starts from a problem the customer already feels, so it reads as help rather than a pitch.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Upselling too early:** Customers who have not seen value yet will not pay for more.
* **Ignoring fit:** A bigger plan the customer will not use leads to churn at renewal.
* **Unclear ownership:** If sales and customer success both pitch, the customer gets mixed messages.

## Upselling FAQs

**What is upselling?**

Upselling is encouraging an existing or prospective customer to buy a higher-priced, more capable version of a product, such as a bigger plan, more seats, or a premium feature, instead of or in addition to what they first chose.

**What is the difference between upselling and cross-selling?**

Upselling offers a better or larger version of the same product, such as a higher plan tier. Cross-selling offers a different but related product, such as an add-on tool. Both grow revenue from existing customers.

**When is the best time to upsell a customer?**

The best time is after the customer has seen clear value and shows a need the higher tier meets, such as hitting usage limits, requesting a premium feature, or growing their team. Avoid upselling during unresolved support problems.

**How do you upsell without being pushy?**

Base the offer on the customer actual usage and goals, explain the specific outcome the upgrade supports, and keep the next step small, such as a trial or short review. If the fit is weak, do not push it.
