# Value-based selling

In short

Value-based selling is a sales approach where the price and the argument for buying are based on the value the customer expects to gain, not on what the product costs to produce or what competitors charge.

It overlaps with value selling. The distinction here is the emphasis on pricing: the rep and buyer agree on the worth of the outcome, and the price is positioned as a fraction of that worth.

## How value-based selling works

* **Understand the buyer outcome:** Learn what success is worth to the buyer in money, time, or risk avoided.
* **Estimate the value:** Build a conservative estimate with the buyer, using their inputs.
* **Set price relative to value:** Present the price as an investment compared with the expected return.
* **Defend it with evidence:** Use customer examples and clear assumptions.

---

## Value-based selling vs. value selling

Value selling is the broader sales method of proving business outcomes. Value-based selling is the pricing-linked version: it uses that proof to justify what you charge and to resist discounting. Many teams use the terms interchangeably, so check what a speaker means.

---

## Example

Say a tool helps a sales team recover time. A cost-based quote adds a margin to hosting and support cost. A value-based quote asks how many hours the team loses per week, what those hours are worth, and prices the product well below that figure. The buyer sees a clear return.

---

## When it works best

It suits products where the outcome varies by customer and can be estimated, such as software that affects revenue or cost. It is harder for commodity products where buyers compare on price alone.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Guessing the value:** Without buyer input the number is not credible.
* **Overpromising:** Treat estimates as ranges and state assumptions.
* **Weak discovery:** If you do not understand the buyer situation, you cannot price to it.
* **Skipping the buyer budget owner:** The person who feels the value should be in the conversation.

## Value-based selling FAQs

**What is value-based selling?**

Value-based selling is a sales approach where the pitch and the price are anchored to the value the customer expects to receive, such as savings or revenue gains, rather than to production cost, competitor pricing, or a standard rate card.

**What is the difference between value-based selling and value selling?**

Value selling is the broader method of connecting a product to business outcomes. Value-based selling emphasizes using that value to set and defend the price. In practice the terms overlap, and many teams use them interchangeably.

**How do you price using value-based selling?**

Work with the buyer to estimate what the outcome is worth using their numbers, keep the estimate conservative, then set a price that is a small share of that value. Document the assumptions so the buyer can justify the spend.

**What are the benefits of value-based selling?**

It reduces pressure to discount, shifts the conversation from price to outcome, gives champions a case for internal approval, and helps reps spot poor-fit deals early where the buyer cannot show meaningful value.
