# Value proposition

In short

A value proposition is a clear statement of the benefit a company delivers to a specific type of customer, and why that customer should choose it over the alternatives. It answers the buyer question: why should I care?

It is the foundation for website copy, ads, outbound messages, and sales pitches. A good one is specific, focused on outcomes, and believable.

## What makes a strong value proposition

* **Specific audience:** It names who it is for, such as finance teams at mid-size companies.
* **Concrete outcome:** It states the result, such as closing the books faster, not a vague promise like better efficiency.
* **Clear difference:** It says what sets the offer apart from the current way of solving the problem, including doing nothing.
* **Plain language:** A buyer should understand it in a few seconds.

---

## How to write one

* **1. Define the customer:** Use your ICP and buyer personas.
* **2. List their problems:** Use sales calls and customer interviews to find the real pains in their words.
* **3. Match your benefits:** Keep only the benefits that address those problems.
* **4. Add proof:** Back it with a customer result, a feature that makes it possible, or a clear mechanism.
* **5. Cut it down:** Reduce it to one or two sentences.

---

## Example format

A simple template: for \[customer type\] who \[problem\], our \[product\] provides \[main benefit\], unlike \[current alternative\], which \[drawback\]. Say a scheduling tool fills it in as: for clinics that lose revenue to no-shows, our tool sends automated reminders and rebooking links, unlike manual phone calls that take staff time.

## Value proposition vs. related terms

A value proposition is the core promise a company makes. A value statement is the shorter message built from it for a channel or audience. Value selling is the sales method of proving that value in a deal.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Feature lists:** Buyers want outcomes, not specs.
* **Too generic:** If a competitor could say the same line, it does not differentiate.
* **No testing:** Check it against customer words and conversion data, and revise.
