# Value statement

In short

A value statement is a concise sentence or two that tells a specific buyer what outcome you deliver for them. It is written for a particular audience and context, such as an email opener, a call intro, or a slide.

It differs from a value proposition, which is the broader core promise of the company. Value statements are the tailored, short-form messages teams derive from that proposition.

## What a value statement includes

* **Who:** The buyer role or company type.
* **Problem or goal:** What they are trying to fix or achieve.
* **Outcome:** The result, in terms they care about.
* **Basis:** A brief reason it is credible, such as a customer result or method.

---

## How to write one

* **Start with the buyer:** Pull the problem from calls or customer interviews.
* **Use one outcome:** Pick the single benefit that matters most to that persona.
* **Keep it under 30 words:** If it takes a breath to say, trim it.
* **Test aloud:** Read it to someone outside your team and ask what they heard.

---

## Example

Say a company sells onboarding software. A value statement for a head of customer success: we help teams get new customers live faster, so fewer accounts stall in the first month. For a CFO the same product gets a different statement about reducing early churn and the cost of delayed revenue.

---

## Value statement vs. value proposition

The value proposition is one core, strategic promise. Value statements are many short variants of it, one per persona, industry, or channel. Write the proposition first, then create statements from it.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Buzzwords:** Words like leading, innovative, or end-to-end say nothing.
* **Company-centered wording:** Starting with we are a platform leaves out the buyer.
* **One statement for all:** A single line for every persona will fit none of them.
