[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Warm calling Sales # Warm calling In short Warm calling is the practice of phoning a prospect after some earlier contact or signal, such as a referral, an email reply, a content download, or a mutual connection. The rep is not a complete stranger. It sits between cold calling, where there is no prior touch, and a call to someone who asked to talk. The earlier touch gives the rep a reason to call and the prospect a reason to listen. ## What counts as a warm signal * **Engagement:** The prospect opened emails repeatedly, visited key pages, or attended a webinar. * **Referral or shared contact:** Someone they know suggested the call. * **Social interaction:** They viewed the rep profile or engaged with a post. * **Past relationship:** A former customer, lost deal, or contact who changed jobs. --- ## How to run a warm call * **Open with the connection:** Mention the specific touch, such as the guide they downloaded. * **Keep the reason relevant:** Tie the call to a problem that content or event implies. * **Ask a question early:** Learn what prompted their interest before pitching. * **Propose a clear next step:** A short meeting or a resource tailored to their answer. --- ## Example Say a prospect attended a webinar on outbound planning. The next day the rep calls: they saw the person joined the session, ask what stood out, and offer a related checklist plus a short follow-up call. The conversation starts from the prospect own interest. --- ## Warm calling vs. cold calling Cold calling targets people with no prior interaction and relies on research and a strong opener. Warm calling uses an existing touch to start a more relevant conversation. Warm calls usually need more tracking of signals, but fewer attempts to reach a receptive person. --- ## Common mistakes * **Treating weak signals as strong:** One email open is not a request to talk. * **Slow follow-up:** Calling a week after the touch loses context. * **Pretending familiarity:** Do not imply a relationship that does not exist. * **Ignoring consent rules:** Check local calling and data regulations; this is not legal advice. --- ## Warm calling FAQs **What is warm calling?** Warm calling is phoning a prospect who has had some earlier contact or shown a signal of interest, such as a referral, an email reply, a webinar attendance, or a content download. It differs from cold calling, which has no prior touch. **What is the difference between warm calling and cold calling?** Cold calling contacts people with no earlier interaction. Warm calling contacts people who have already engaged or are connected in some way, so the rep has a relevant reason to call and the prospect has some context for who is calling. **How do you start a warm call?** Open by naming the earlier connection, such as the webinar they attended or the person who suggested the call. Briefly state why you are calling, ask a question about their interest, and listen before proposing a clear next step. **Is warm calling more effective than cold calling?** Warm calls often feel more relevant because there is context, but results depend on signal quality, timing, and how the rep handles the conversation. A weak signal, such as one email open, does not make a call truly warm.
