# Web scraping

In short

Web scraping is the automated process of retrieving data from web pages and converting it into a structured format such as a spreadsheet or database. A program requests a page, reads its HTML, and pulls out specific fields like company names, job titles, or prices.

In B2B go-to-market, scraping is a way to collect public signals that no database lists yet. It is not the same as an API, which a site offers on purpose, and it carries technical and legal considerations worth understanding before you start.

## How web scraping works

A scraper follows a simple loop: fetch a page, parse it, extract fields, and store them.

* **Fetch:** Request the page, sometimes using a headless browser for sites that load content with JavaScript.
* **Parse:** Locate elements by HTML structure or text patterns.
* **Store:** Save results to a database or file, then clean and deduplicate them.
* **Repeat:** Schedule runs to track changes over time.

---

## GTM use cases

Say a team sells to companies hiring data engineers. It could scrape public job boards weekly, match postings to accounts, and alert reps when a target posts a new role. Other uses include tracking pricing pages, collecting event attendee lists that are published openly, and detecting technologies on a company website.

---

## Risks and limits

* **Terms of service:** Many sites forbid automated access. Review the rules before scraping.
* **Privacy law:** Personal data can fall under GDPR or CCPA even when public. This is general information, not legal advice.
* **Fragility:** Layout changes break scrapers, so they need maintenance.
* **Blocking:** Rate limits and bot detection can stop collection.
* **Data quality:** Scraped fields are messy and need normalization and verification.

---

## Scraping vs. APIs and licensed data

Prefer an official API when one exists, since it is stable and permitted. Licensed data from a provider removes the maintenance burden. Scraping fits when the signal is public, specific to you, and not sold elsewhere.

---

## Best practices

Respect robots.txt and rate limits, collect only what you need, avoid personal data where possible, log sources, and validate output before it reaches the CRM.

## Web scraping FAQs

**What is web scraping used for in sales and marketing?**

Teams use web scraping to collect public information at scale, such as job postings, company descriptions, technology usage, pricing changes, and directory listings. The output feeds prospect lists, account research, and trigger alerts for outreach.

**Is web scraping legal?**

It depends on what you collect, where, and how. Public data can still be covered by site terms, copyright, and privacy laws like GDPR. Courts have reached different conclusions in different cases. This is general information, not legal advice, so consult counsel.

**What is the difference between web scraping and an API?**

An API is an interface a website or service provides on purpose, with documented fields and usage rules. Web scraping reads the page output without that cooperation. APIs are more stable and clearly permitted, while scrapers break when layouts change.

**How do I start web scraping for lead generation?**

Define the exact signal you need, check whether an API or licensed source already provides it, then build or configure a scraper with rate limits. Clean the output, match it to accounts, and validate before loading it into your CRM.
