# Win rate

In short

Win rate is the share of opportunities that close as won out of all opportunities that reach a final outcome in a given period. If a team closes 20 deals and loses 60, its win rate is 25%.

It tells you how efficiently pipeline turns into revenue. It differs from conversion rate, which usually measures movement between any two funnel stages, such as lead to opportunity.

## How to calculate win rate

The basic formula is closed-won deals divided by the sum of closed-won and closed-lost deals, multiplied by 100. Only count opportunities that have a final outcome.

* **By count:** Won deals divided by all closed deals. Simple and easy to compare across reps.
* **By value:** Won revenue divided by total closed revenue. This shows whether you win big deals as often as small ones.
* **Example:** Say a team closes 12 deals as won and 48 as lost this quarter. Its win rate by count is 20%.

---

## Choosing the right denominator

Most disagreements about win rate come from what counts as an opportunity. Decide once and document it.

### Where to start counting

Counting from a late stage, such as after a demo, gives a higher rate than counting from first qualification. Pick one entry stage and keep it fixed.

### No decision and stalled deals

Deals that go quiet are often left open and ignored. Close them out as lost, or the rate looks better than reality.

---

## How to improve win rate

* **Tighten qualification:** Stop working accounts that do not match your ideal customer profile. Fewer poor-fit deals raises the rate immediately.
* **Slice the data:** Break win rate down by segment, lead source, deal size, and rep to find where you win and lose.
* **Learn from losses:** Run a structured win-loss analysis to learn why buyers chose you or someone else.
* **Multi-thread deals:** Deals with several engaged stakeholders tend to be less fragile than single-contact deals.

---

## Common win rate mistakes

* **Chasing the number:** Reps can raise win rate by dropping hard deals early. Track it alongside pipeline volume and revenue.
* **One blended figure:** An average across inbound, outbound, and partner deals hides large differences.
* **Small samples:** A rate based on a handful of deals swings wildly. Use a longer window or a bigger segment.

## Win rate FAQs

**How do you calculate win rate in sales?**

Divide the number of closed-won opportunities by the total of closed-won and closed-lost opportunities in the same period, then multiply by 100. Leave out deals that are still open, and use one fixed starting stage.

**What is a good win rate for a B2B sales team?**

There is no single good win rate. It depends on deal size, sales cycle, lead source, and how strictly you qualify. Compare your rate against your own history and across segments rather than against a generic target.

**What is the difference between win rate and conversion rate?**

Win rate measures how many opportunities end as closed-won deals. Conversion rate is broader and can measure movement between any two stages, such as visitor to lead or lead to opportunity. Win rate is the final step of the funnel.

**How can you improve your win rate?**

Qualify more strictly against your ideal customer profile, segment the numbers to see where you win, study lost deals, and involve more stakeholders in each deal. Review the results by segment each quarter.
