# Word-of-mouth marketing

Also known as: WOM marketing

In short

Word-of-mouth marketing is the practice of earning and encouraging recommendations that spread from person to person, instead of relying only on paid promotion. The message comes from someone the buyer trusts, which gives it more weight than an ad.

In B2B, word of mouth shows up in peer recommendations, community threads, customer reviews, and introductions between colleagues. It cannot be bought directly, but a team can create the conditions for it. It differs from referral marketing, which adds a structured reward or ask on top of the natural conversation.

## Why word of mouth works in B2B

Business purchases carry risk, so buyers ask peers before they trust vendors. A recommendation from someone who has used the product answers the question "will this work for a team like mine?" better than a landing page can.

---

## How to encourage word of mouth

* **Deliver a result worth mentioning:** People talk about outcomes and good surprises, so invest in onboarding and support.
* **Make sharing easy:** Offer case studies, short summaries, and shareable assets that a champion can forward.
* **Ask at the right moment:** Request a review or introduction right after a visible win.
* **Join the places where buyers talk:** Industry communities, Slack groups, and events are where recommendations happen.
* **Equip your advocates:** Give happy customers early access, a direct line to the team, and recognition.

---

## How to measure it

Word of mouth is hard to attribute. Add an open-text field to forms asking how people heard about you, and read the answers. Say many new leads write "a colleague told me" or name a community. That tells you the channel is working even when the last click was direct or organic search. Pair this with win-rate and sales-cycle data for those deals.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Treating it as free:** It needs investment in product, service, and community time.
* **Faking it:** Fake reviews or staged endorsements damage trust quickly.
* **Ignoring detractors:** Unhappy customers talk too. Fix the cause and respond openly.
* **Relying on last-click attribution:** It hides recommendations that happen in private chats.

## Word-of-mouth marketing FAQs

**What is word-of-mouth marketing?**

Word-of-mouth marketing is the practice of encouraging customers and peers to recommend a product to others. The recommendation comes from a trusted person rather than an advertisement, which makes it more persuasive, especially for risky business purchases.

**How do you measure word-of-mouth marketing?**

Add a self-reported question such as how did you hear about us to forms and demo requests, then review the answers. Combine that with direct traffic trends, branded search, and the win rate and cycle length of recommended deals.

**What is the difference between word-of-mouth and referral marketing?**

Word of mouth is organic conversation about your product. Referral marketing is a structured program that asks customers to refer others, often with an incentive. Referral programs can amplify word of mouth but cannot replace it.

**Does word-of-mouth marketing work for B2B?**

Yes. B2B buyers carry risk and often ask peers, communities, and review sites before choosing a vendor. Strong onboarding, useful content, and active customer communities create more recommendations over time.
