Off the clock: why I love the racetrack

More than a fan

I’m Michael, founder and CEO of Ocean.io. I’m a big Formula 1 fan, but watching isn’t quite enough for me. I love going to the racetrack and getting behind the wheel myself. Most recently, that meant a day at Sonoma Raceway.

The thrill of the chase

One of my favourite things is giving someone in a Porsche 911 GT3 RS a run for their money, even though I’m in a much less expensive ride.

It’s not about having the fastest car. It’s about getting every last bit out of the one you’ve got.

Driving on the margin

On the track, you drive at the absolute limit of what you and the car are capable of. That keeps you focused. Very focused.

Out there, nothing else matters. You’re 100% in the zone and constantly on the margin. One distraction and you’re in the ditch, so you keep your mind in one place.

My favourite way to switch off

A day like that is the best anti-stress cure I know. It’s completely different from my everyday life.

While I’m there, Ocean is a far and distant thing. Until, of course, I open my laptop back home. But spend a few hours somewhere that different, and you come home with a fresh perspective.
