Signals & Intent

Buyer intent

In short

Buyer intent is the degree to which a prospect is oriented toward buying, shown through what they do. A buyer who compares vendors and reads pricing pages has stronger intent than one who read a single introductory article.

The term describes the state of the buyer. Buyer intent data is the evidence you collect to infer that state, and buying signals are the individual events within it.

Levels of buyer intent

  • Low: Early learning. The buyer is exploring a problem and reads general content.
  • Medium: Evaluating approaches. The buyer compares categories and reads case studies.
  • High: Selecting a vendor. The buyer visits pricing, requests a demo, or asks about contracts.

How to read it

Intent is a spectrum, and it moves. One action rarely proves it. Look for depth (several actions), breadth (several people), and trend (rising versus last month). Pair it with fit: strong intent at a company you cannot serve is not a sales opportunity.

Matching action to intent

  • Low: Educational content and ads. No rep outreach yet.
  • Medium: Targeted content, relevant case studies, and light outreach.
  • High: Direct rep contact, a tailored reply, and a fast route to a meeting.

How buyer intent differs from nearby terms

Buyer intent is the state, buyer intent data is the dataset, buying intent is the same idea phrased from the purchase side, and a buying signal is one observable event. Use the term that matches what you are discussing.

Common mistakes

  • Reacting to one click: A single visit rarely warrants a call.
  • Ignoring timing: Intent decays. Follow up while it is fresh.
  • Calling every lead high intent: If everything is a priority, nothing is.

Buyer intent FAQs

What is buyer intent?

Buyer intent is how likely a person or company is to be moving toward a purchase, inferred from their actions such as research, comparisons, and engagement. It ranges from early learning to active vendor selection.

How do you measure buyer intent?

Track actions such as pricing page visits, demo requests, comparison content, repeated visits, and topic research, then weight them by how strongly they predicted past purchases. Combine the result with fit so intent at poor-fit companies does not dominate.

What are examples of high buyer intent?

Requesting a demo, visiting pricing and security pages, several stakeholders from one company researching the same topic, asking about contracts, or comparing your product with alternatives. Such actions suggest evaluation rather than early learning.

Is buyer intent the same as buyer intent data?

No. Buyer intent is the buyer's inclination to purchase. Buyer intent data is the collected information, such as visits and research activity, that you use to estimate that inclination. The data is evidence, and intent is the conclusion.
