Contract value (CV)
Also known as: CV
In short
Contract value (CV) is the monetary value of a customer contract, based on the fees the customer agrees to pay. Depending on context it can mean the full amount over the contract term or the amount per year.
Because the term is used loosely, teams should state which version they mean. Clear definitions keep reports, commissions, and forecasts consistent.
Contract value and its variants
- Total contract value (TCV): All contracted fees over the full term, often including one-time fees.
- Annual contract value (ACV): The yearly portion of recurring contract value.
- Average contract value: The mean contract value across deals in a period or segment.
Example
Say a customer signs a three-year agreement at 30,000 per year plus a 6,000 one-time setup fee. Total contract value is 96,000. Annual contract value for the recurring part is 30,000.
How GTM teams use contract value
Quotas and compensation
Reps are often measured on booked value. The definition decides whether multi-year deals or setup fees count.
Segmentation
Comparing contract value by segment or lead source shows where the larger deals come from.
Resourcing
Larger contract values can justify more discovery, solution engineering, and executive involvement. Smaller ones need a lighter process.
Common mistakes
- Mixing definitions: Reporting total value in one place and annual value in another produces confusing numbers.
- Counting uncommitted amounts: Exclude optional add-ons and unsigned renewals.
- Ignoring discounts and ramps: Use the value actually contracted, not list price.
- Equating value with profit: A high contract value with heavy delivery cost can still be unattractive.
Contract value (CV) FAQs
What is contract value (CV)?
Contract value is the amount a customer agrees to pay under a contract. It may refer to the total over the whole term or to a yearly figure, so teams should define which one they use when reporting and setting targets.
How do you calculate contract value?
Add up the fees the customer has committed to pay under the agreement. For a three-year deal at 30,000 per year with a 6,000 setup fee, the total is 96,000. Decide in advance whether one-time fees are included.
What is the difference between contract value and annual contract value?
Contract value usually covers the whole agreement, while annual contract value is the recurring amount for one year. A multi-year deal therefore has a larger contract value than annual contract value, even though both describe the same contract.
Why does contract value matter for sales teams?
It sizes deals, drives quotas and commissions, and helps decide how much effort a prospect deserves. Comparing contract value across segments also shows which customers produce larger deals and where to focus prospecting.
