Customer lifetime value (LTV)
Also known as: CLV, CLTV, lifetime value
In short
Customer lifetime value (LTV) is the total revenue, or more usefully the gross profit, you expect to earn from a customer across the time they stay with you. In SaaS it is usually estimated from average revenue per account, gross margin, and churn.
LTV tells you how much an acquired customer is worth. Compared with acquisition cost, it shows whether your growth is profitable and which segments deserve more investment.
How to calculate LTV
A common simple formula for subscription businesses is: average monthly recurring revenue per account, times gross margin, divided by monthly churn rate.
Say an account pays 1,000 per month, gross margin is 80 percent, and monthly churn is 2 percent. LTV is 1,000 x 0.8 / 0.02 = 40,000. These numbers are illustrative only.
Why LTV matters for GTM teams
- Budget: It caps how much you can profitably spend to win a customer.
- Segmentation: Comparing LTV by segment shows which customer types are worth targeting.
- Channel choice: Channels that bring higher-LTV customers can justify higher cost per lead.
- Retention focus: Because churn sits in the denominator, small retention gains lift LTV sharply.
LTV and acquisition cost
LTV is rarely read alone. Teams pair it with customer acquisition cost in the LTV to CAC ratio, and with CAC payback period to see how fast the cost returns. A high ratio with a very long payback can still strain cash.
How to increase LTV
Reduce churn
Improve onboarding, monitor health scores, and fix the top reasons customers leave.
Grow account value
Add upsell, cross-sell, and seat expansion plays to raise revenue per account.
Target better-fit customers
Narrow outbound and ads to your ideal customer profile so you win customers who stay longer.
Common mistakes
- Using revenue, not margin: Revenue overstates value when serving customers is costly.
- Blending all segments: An average hides high-value and low-value groups.
- Very low churn input: Young companies with little history can produce inflated LTV; treat early figures as rough estimates.
Customer lifetime value FAQs
What is customer lifetime value (LTV)?
Customer lifetime value is the total revenue or gross profit a customer is expected to generate over their entire relationship with your company. It helps teams decide how much to spend acquiring customers and which segments to prioritize.
How do you calculate customer lifetime value in SaaS?
A common formula is average recurring revenue per account multiplied by gross margin, divided by the churn rate for the same period. For example, monthly revenue and monthly churn give a lifetime value in the same currency.
What is the difference between LTV and CAC?
LTV is what a customer is worth over time, while CAC is what it costs to acquire them. Comparing the two as an LTV to CAC ratio shows whether acquiring customers is profitable and sustainable for the business.
How can you improve customer lifetime value?
Reduce churn through better onboarding and proactive support, raise revenue per account with upsell and expansion, and focus acquisition on customers who fit your ideal profile and tend to stay longer.
