Form enrichment
In short
Form enrichment is the practice of filling in extra fields about a lead, such as company size, industry, or job title, from outside data after the visitor submits a form, often using just a work email address.
The goal is shorter forms and richer records. Visitors type a name and email; the system adds the rest in the background so the lead can be scored and routed immediately.
How it works
1. Capture a minimal form
Ask only for what you cannot look up: usually a work email, and optionally name and a free-text need.
2. Look up the missing fields
The email domain identifies the company; the address can match a person. An enrichment source returns fields such as industry, employee count, and title.
3. Write back and route
Enriched values are saved to the CRM or marketing automation record, then scoring and assignment rules run on them.
Form enrichment vs. progressive profiling
Progressive profiling asks returning visitors new questions on each visit. Form enrichment fills answers without asking. Many teams use both: enrich what is knowable, ask only what is not.
Example
Say a form drops from eight fields to two. The visitor enters a work email. Within seconds the record gains company name, size band, and industry, and a lead from a target-tier account is assigned to an account executive instead of waiting in a general queue.
Common mistakes
- Overwriting user input: If a prospect types their own title, do not replace it with a third-party guess without a rule for which wins.
- Personal email addresses: Gmail or similar domains cannot identify a company. Plan a fallback, such as asking for company name.
- Slow lookups: Routing that waits on enrichment delays follow-up. Set a timeout and a default path.
- Ignoring consent: Tell people what data you add and honor privacy rules. This is general information, not legal advice.
Metrics to watch
- Conversion rate: Compare before and after shortening the form.
- Fill rate: Share of submissions with each key field populated afterward.
- Accuracy: Sample enriched values against what reps learn on calls.
Form enrichment FAQs
What is form enrichment?
Form enrichment automatically adds company and contact details to a form submission, usually from just a work email. It lets you ask fewer questions on the form while still capturing the fields sales needs for scoring and routing.
Does form enrichment improve conversion rates?
Shorter forms often convert better because they ask visitors for less effort, and enrichment replaces the removed fields. The effect varies by audience and offer, so run an A/B test on your own traffic before assuming a gain.
What is the difference between form enrichment and progressive profiling?
Form enrichment fills in fields from outside data without asking the visitor. Progressive profiling asks a returning visitor different questions on each visit. They complement each other: enrich what you can look up and ask for the rest.
What happens if a visitor uses a personal email on an enriched form?
A personal address such as a free webmail account does not reveal a company, so enrichment may return little. Add a fallback, such as a company name field shown only in that case, and a default routing rule.
