LACE objection handling

In short

LACE is an objection-handling framework that stands for Listen, Acknowledge, Clarify, and Explain. It is a four-step pattern for responding to buyer pushback in a calm and structured way.

Like similar models, it puts understanding before answering. The Clarify step is the most important, because a stated objection is often not the real one.

The steps

Listen

Hear the full objection without interrupting.

Acknowledge

Say you understand the concern so the buyer feels heard.

Clarify

Ask a question to find what sits behind the objection. "When you say it is too expensive, compared to what?"

Explain

Give a direct, relevant answer. Use a specific example, number from the buyer's own case, or customer reference.

Example in a call

Buyer: "Your tool looks similar to what we have." Rep listens, then acknowledges: "That is reasonable, many products look alike at first." Then clarifies: "Which parts of your current setup work well for you?" The buyer names two. The rep explains how the product differs on the one gap the buyer mentioned.

When to use it

  • Price and timing objections: Where a quick, structured reply keeps momentum.
  • Live calls: The steps are short enough to run in conversation.
  • Coaching: Reps can practice and review each step separately.

How it differs from similar frameworks

LACE is shorter than LAARC, which adds a confirmation step, and nearly identical to LAER, which uses "explore" and "respond". The differences are in wording more than method. Pick one and train the team on it so coaching feedback is consistent.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the listen step: Replying before the buyer finishes makes the answer miss the real concern.
  • Treating it as a script: Buyers notice recited lines. Use your own words.
  • Not asking for the next step: A good response should end with a question or a clear action.
  • Solving the wrong objection: The first objection is often a stand-in. Ask a follow-up to find the real one.

LACE objection handling FAQs

What does LACE stand for in sales objection handling?

LACE stands for Listen, Acknowledge, Clarify, and Explain. It is a four-step objection-handling framework. Reps hear the concern, show understanding, ask what is behind it, and then give a targeted answer.

How do you use the LACE objection handling method?

Listen without interrupting, acknowledge the concern, ask a clarifying question to find the real issue, and explain your answer using relevant evidence. Finish by asking for a next step so the conversation keeps moving.

What is the difference between LACE and LAER objection handling?

They are very similar. LACE uses Clarify and Explain, while LAER uses Explore and Respond. Both stress listening and acknowledging first and asking questions before answering. The choice mostly comes down to wording your team prefers.

Is LACE better than other objection handling frameworks?

No framework is universally better. LACE is short and easy to remember, which helps adoption, but it lacks an explicit confirmation step. Choose based on how your team sells and whether reps will use it consistently.
