Market segmentation

In short

Market segmentation is the practice of splitting a broad market into smaller groups whose members share traits, needs, or behaviors. Each segment can then get its own positioning, pricing, channels, and sales motion.

It is the umbrella concept. Firmographic, behavioral, and needs-based segmentation are different ways to draw the groups, and account segmentation applies the same idea to a list of named accounts.

Common ways to segment a B2B market

  • Firmographic: Industry, company size, region, and growth stage.
  • Technographic: The tools and platforms a company uses.
  • Behavioral: How accounts engage, buy, or use a product.
  • Needs-based: The problem the buyer is trying to solve.

How to segment a market

1. Start from your customer data

Look at which customers retain and expand, and what they have in common.

2. Pick a few meaningful dimensions

Choose traits that change how you sell or what you say. A trait that changes nothing is not worth segmenting on.

3. Test that segments differ

Compare win rate, deal size, and sales cycle across segments. If they look the same, merge them.

4. Prioritize

Rank segments by size, fit, and ease of winning, then focus on the top one or two first.

Example

Say a team splits a market by size. Small companies buy quickly on a card, while large companies need security reviews and a longer cycle. The team gives each group its own landing page, offer, and sales path. The split is illustrative.

Common mistakes

  • Too many segments: You cannot write messaging for fifty groups. Keep it to what you can act on.
  • Segments that cannot be reached: If you cannot find or contact a segment, it is not usable.
  • Segmenting without acting: Every segment needs a different message, offer, or owner, or the work is wasted.

Market segmentation FAQs

What is market segmentation?

Market segmentation divides a market into groups of buyers who share traits, needs, or behaviors. Each group can then be targeted with tailored messaging, pricing, and sales approaches rather than one generic pitch for everyone.

What are the types of market segmentation in B2B?

The main types are firmographic (industry, size, region), technographic (tools used), behavioral (how accounts engage or buy), and needs-based (the problem being solved). Most teams combine two or three that change how they sell.

How do you segment a B2B market?

Analyze your best customers, choose a few traits that change how you sell, test that segments differ in win rate or deal size, and prioritize the best ones. Merge segments that behave alike.

What is the difference between market segmentation and account segmentation?

Market segmentation groups the whole market, including companies you have not touched. Account segmentation groups a defined list of accounts, often your customers and targets, to plan coverage and campaigns for each group.
