ABM

One-to-one ABM

Also known as: strategic ABM, ABM strategic

In short

One-to-one ABM is an account-based marketing approach where marketing and sales build a fully customized program for a single strategic account. Content, offers, and outreach are designed around that company's goals, structure, and people.

It is the most intensive of the three ABM tiers, so it is reserved for a handful of very high-value accounts. One-to-few ABM serves small clusters with shared campaigns, and one-to-many ABM serves large lists with automation. One-to-one trades scale for depth.

What a one-to-one ABM program includes

Deep account research

Study the company's strategy, earnings or public statements, leadership changes, products, and challenges. Map the buying group and each person's likely priorities.

A custom plan

Set a goal for the account, such as winning a first deal or expanding an existing one, and define the actions, owners, and dates that support it.

Bespoke content and experiences

Create material made for that account: a tailored business case, a personalized microsite, an executive roundtable, or a workshop on their problem.

Joint sales and marketing ownership

An account executive and a marketer plan together and meet often. Customer success and leadership join when relevant.

Example

Say a software vendor wants a large manufacturer as a customer. The team learns the manufacturer is consolidating plants, builds a short analysis of how the product could support that, invites three executives to a small briefing, and sends a tailored proposal after the briefing.

When it is worth the effort

  • High potential value: The account could be worth many times an average deal.
  • Complex buying group: Many stakeholders across departments need separate attention.
  • Strategic importance: The logo or relationship opens other opportunities.

Common mistakes

  • Too many accounts: A team cannot run deep programs for dozens of accounts at once.
  • Personalization without insight: Using a name and logo is not the same as understanding the account.
  • No clear goal: A program without a defined outcome is hard to judge or stop.
  • Marketing-only effort: Without sales involvement, the work rarely reaches decision makers.

One-to-one ABM FAQs

What is one-to-one ABM?

One-to-one ABM is an account-based marketing approach in which sales and marketing build a fully customized program for a single high-value account, with tailored research, content, and outreach designed around that company and its people.

How many accounts should you run one-to-one ABM for?

Usually only a handful, since each program needs deep research, custom content, and senior attention. The right number depends on team capacity. If quality drops as you add accounts, move some to one-to-few ABM.

What is the difference between one-to-one ABM and one-to-few ABM?

One-to-one ABM builds a unique plan for a single account. One-to-few ABM builds a shared campaign for a cluster of similar accounts, with small account-specific touches. One-to-one is deeper and costlier per account.

How do you choose accounts for one-to-one ABM?

Pick accounts with very high potential value, complex buying groups, or strategic importance, and where you have a realistic path to a relationship. Confirm with sales leadership that the account justifies a custom program.
