Product qualified lead (PQL)
In short
A product qualified lead (PQL) is a free trial or freemium user whose in-product behavior suggests they are ready to buy. The signal comes from what they do in the product, not from content they download or forms they fill in.
PQLs matter most in product-led and hybrid sales motions. They give sales a warm, evidence-based reason to reach out, because the person has already experienced the value of the product firsthand.
How a PQL differs from an MQL
A person can be both, but PQLs usually convert at a different rate because they have already tried the product.
- Product qualified lead: Qualified by product behavior: activation steps, feature use, team invites, or hitting a plan limit.
- Marketing qualified lead: Qualified by marketing engagement such as content downloads, webinar attendance, and email clicks.
What signals make someone a PQL
- Activation: Completed the key setup steps, such as connecting a data source or sending a first campaign.
- Depth of use: Returned several times in a week or used a paid-plan feature.
- Team expansion: Invited colleagues or created a shared workspace.
- Limit hits: Reached a usage cap or tried to access a locked feature.
How to define PQLs in practice
Say a team finds that most buyers invited at least two teammates and ran a report within seven days. That combination becomes the first PQL rule, and it gets reviewed each quarter.
- Step 1: Look at paying customers and find the actions they took in the first weeks.
- Step 2: Pick two or three actions that separate buyers from non-buyers.
- Step 3: Add a company fit filter so a student with heavy usage does not outrank a target account.
- Step 4: Send PQLs to sales with the usage context in the CRM record.
Common PQL mistakes
- Usage without fit: High activity from a company outside your ICP wastes rep time.
- Too many rules: A rule nobody can explain will not be trusted by sales.
- No follow-up speed: A PQL goes cold fast. Route and reach out within hours.
- Ignoring context: Reps who pitch generically ignore the product behavior that made the lead qualified.
Product qualified lead FAQs
What is a product qualified lead (PQL)?
A product qualified lead is a user of a free trial or freemium product whose in-product actions, such as completing setup, using key features, or inviting teammates, show they are likely to become a paying customer. Sales usually follows up on them directly.
What is the difference between a PQL and an MQL?
An MQL is qualified by marketing engagement, such as content downloads or email clicks. A PQL is qualified by actual product usage. PQLs typically show stronger buying intent because the person has already experienced the product.
How do you define a PQL?
Review your paying customers, identify the early product actions that separate them from users who never bought, and turn two or three of those into a rule. Add company fit criteria, then test and refine the rule regularly.
Do you need a free product to have PQLs?
You need some way for prospects to use the product before buying, such as a free tier, free trial, or sandbox. Without any hands-on access there is no product behavior to measure, so lead qualification relies on other signals.
