Qualification call
In short
A qualification call is a short conversation, often 15 to 30 minutes, where a rep decides whether a lead is worth more sales effort. The rep checks fit, need, authority, budget, and timing against the team's criteria.
It usually comes before a discovery call or demo. Its purpose is to filter, so account executives spend time only on opportunities with a real chance to close.
Qualification call vs. discovery call
A qualification call asks "should we pursue this?" and ends in a yes or no. A discovery call goes deeper into the problem, stakeholders, and solution fit for opportunities already judged worth pursuing. In small teams, the two are sometimes combined.
What to cover
- Fit: Does the company match your ideal customer profile?
- Problem: What is the pain, and how are they handling it today?
- Authority: Who decides, and who else is involved?
- Budget: Is there money or a path to it?
- Timing: Is there a date or event driving the decision?
How to run one
Prepare in five minutes
Review the company, the contact's role, and what triggered the conversation.
Open with the agenda
State the purpose and length, and ask what they want from the call.
Ask, then listen
Use open questions and follow up on vague answers. Avoid reading a checklist aloud.
Decide and record
Agree a clear next step or end politely. Log the answers in the CRM using your qualification framework such as BANT.
Common mistakes
- Pitching too soon: A demo before qualifying wastes AE time.
- Interrogating: Rapid-fire questions feel like a form, not a conversation.
- Loose criteria: Without a shared definition, qualification varies by rep.
- Passing weak leads: Handing off to hit a meeting target hurts pipeline quality.
Qualification call FAQs
What is a qualification call?
A qualification call is a short conversation where a rep checks whether a lead has the fit, need, authority, budget, and timing to justify a full sales process. It ends with a decision to advance the lead or stop.
How long should a qualification call be?
Most qualification calls last 15 to 30 minutes. They only need enough time to confirm fit, problem, decision process, and timing. Longer conversations usually belong in a discovery call or demo.
What is the difference between a qualification call and a discovery call?
A qualification call decides whether a lead deserves further effort. A discovery call digs into the problem, stakeholders, and solution fit of a lead already qualified. In small teams they are sometimes merged into one conversation.
What questions should you ask on a qualification call?
Ask about the problem they want to solve, how they handle it now, who is involved in the decision, what budget or approval path exists, and what timeline they are working toward. Keep it conversational, not a checklist.
