Marketing mix
In short
The marketing mix is the combination of controllable decisions a company makes to bring an offer to a target market. The classic version is the 4Ps: product, price, place, and promotion.
It is a planning checklist. The point is that results depend on all four levers working together, not on promotion alone. In B2B and SaaS, teams often extend it with people, process, and physical evidence, the 7Ps used for services.
The 4Ps in a B2B context
- Product: What you sell, its packaging, and which problem it solves for which buyer.
- Price: Pricing model, tiers, discounts, and contract terms.
- Place: How buyers reach you: direct sales, self-serve, partners, or marketplaces.
- Promotion: Content, ads, events, outbound, and PR used to create demand.
Example
Say a SaaS team sees good demos but weak conversion. Looking only at promotion, they would buy more leads. Reviewing the whole mix, they notice the entry tier is priced for enterprise budgets and no self-serve path exists. Changing price and place may help more than any campaign.
How to use it
Write one line per P for each segment you target. Check that they agree: a premium price with a thin sales motion, or a self-serve channel with a product that needs onboarding, signals a mismatch. Revisit the mix when you enter a new segment or launch a major feature.
Marketing mix vs. marketing mix modeling
Marketing mix modeling is a different thing: a statistical method that estimates how much each channel contributed to sales. The marketing mix is the strategic framework described here. The modeling is also used to decide how to split a budget across channels.
Common mistakes
- Treating it as a promotion list: Channel plans are only one of four levers.
- One mix for all segments: Different segments often need different pricing and channels.
- Never updating: Revisit it as the market and product change.
Marketing mix FAQs
What is the marketing mix?
The marketing mix is the set of levers a company controls to bring an offer to market. The classic framework is the 4Ps: product, price, place, and promotion. Together they shape how the offer is perceived and bought.
What are the 4Ps of the marketing mix?
The 4Ps are product, price, place, and promotion. Product is what you sell, price is how you charge, place is how buyers reach you, and promotion is how you communicate and create demand for the offer.
What is the 7Ps marketing mix?
The 7Ps extend the 4Ps with people, process, and physical evidence. It is mainly used for services and software, where the delivery experience, the staff involved, and proof of quality heavily influence the purchase.
Is marketing mix the same as marketing mix modeling?
No. The marketing mix is a strategic framework of product, price, place, and promotion. Marketing mix modeling is a statistical technique that estimates how much each marketing channel contributed to sales, to guide budget allocation.
