Pipeline coverage
In short
Pipeline coverage is the ratio of the total value of open pipeline to the revenue target for the same period. If a team needs 500,000 in new bookings and has 1,500,000 in qualified pipeline, coverage is 3x.
It is a planning check, not a prediction. Coverage tells you if you have enough raw material; it does not tell you if those deals are real. That is why it is read alongside win rate and pipeline quality.
How to calculate pipeline coverage
Divide open pipeline by the remaining target for the period.
- Formula: Pipeline coverage = open pipeline value / remaining quota.
- Scope: Use only qualified opportunities with a close date in the period.
- Level: Calculate by rep, team, and segment, not only in total.
How much coverage do you need?
The right ratio depends on your win rate. A rough way to set it is to divide 1 by your historical win rate. Say a team closes one in four qualified deals. It needs about 4x coverage to hit target on average. A team that wins one in two needs about 2x.
Use your own closed data. A generic rule such as "3x" is a starting point, not a standard.
Why coverage can mislead
- Stale deals: Old opportunities with no activity inflate the number.
- Late-stage gaps: Plenty of early pipeline does not help if the quarter closes in two weeks.
- Concentration: One large deal can make coverage look healthy while the rest is thin.
- Inflated stages: Deals moved forward without exit criteria overstate quality.
How to improve coverage
Look at stage mix
Check how much coverage sits in early, middle, and late stages for the time left in the period.
Fix the source of the gap
If coverage is low, decide whether you need more pipeline generation or better conversion of what exists.
Start earlier
Pipeline for next quarter is built this quarter. Track forward coverage, not only current.
Pipeline coverage FAQs
What is pipeline coverage?
Pipeline coverage is the ratio of open qualified pipeline value to the sales target for a period. A 3x ratio means there is three times as much pipeline as the revenue you need to close, giving a buffer for deals that will be lost.
How do you calculate pipeline coverage ratio?
Divide the total value of open, qualified opportunities expected to close in the period by the remaining quota for that period. For example, 1,200,000 of pipeline against a 400,000 target gives 3x coverage.
What is a good pipeline coverage ratio?
It depends on your win rate. Divide 1 by your historical win rate to estimate it: a team that wins one in four deals needs roughly 4x. Common rules like 3x are starting points, so calibrate against your own closed-won and closed-lost data.
