Sales coverage

In short

Sales coverage is the degree to which your sales resources reach the market you want to sell to. It covers which accounts, segments, regions, and roles have an assigned seller and receive consistent outreach.

It is a capacity and design question, not a performance metric. Not to be confused with pipeline coverage, which compares pipeline value to quota. Sales coverage asks whether the right people are assigned to the right accounts.

What sales coverage includes

  • Account coverage:: What share of your target accounts has an owner and active outreach.
  • Role coverage:: How many buying-group roles, not just one contact, you engage per account.
  • Geographic coverage:: Whether regions and time zones have sellers who speak the language and know the market.
  • Channel coverage:: Which accounts are handled by field sales, inside sales, partners, or self-serve.

Common sales coverage models

Teams assign coverage by territory, industry, account size, named accounts, or a mix. Large accounts often get a named AE and a support team, while smaller accounts are pooled and served by inside sales.

How to assess your coverage

1. List your target accounts

Start from your ideal customer profile and total addressable market, then count the accounts that fit.

2. Match accounts to owners

Find accounts with no owner or no activity in the last quarter. These are your coverage gaps.

3. Compare workload to capacity

Say a rep owns 400 accounts but can realistically work 80 well. The other 320 are covered on paper only.

Common mistakes

  • Assigning too many accounts per rep, so most receive no real outreach.
  • Treating one contact per account as full coverage of the buying group.
  • Never reassigning accounts after rep turnover or territory changes.

Sales coverage FAQs

What is sales coverage?

Sales coverage is how fully your sales team reaches your target market. It looks at which accounts, regions, segments, and buying roles have an assigned seller and consistent outreach, and where gaps or overloaded reps leave opportunities untouched.

What is the difference between sales coverage and pipeline coverage?

Sales coverage is about whether the right sellers are assigned to the right accounts and roles. Pipeline coverage is a ratio comparing the value of open pipeline to quota. One is about market reach, the other about whether you have enough pipeline to hit target.

How do you measure sales coverage?

Compare your list of target accounts with account ownership and recent activity. Measure the share of target accounts with an owner, the number of contacts engaged per account, and the accounts per rep against what each rep can realistically work.

How do you design a sales coverage model?

A sales coverage model is the plan that decides who sells to which accounts. It can be based on territory, industry, company size, or named accounts, and often combines field sales, inside sales, partners, and self-serve channels.
