Sales velocity
In short
Sales velocity is a metric that shows how much revenue your pipeline generates per day, week, or month. It is calculated as the number of opportunities times average deal size times win rate, divided by sales cycle length.
Velocity combines four levers into one number, so it shows which lever is limiting growth. It is closely related to pipeline velocity; in practice the two terms are usually used for the same formula.
The sales velocity formula
Sales velocity = (opportunities x average deal size x win rate) / sales cycle length in days.
The result is revenue per day. Multiply by 30 for a monthly figure.
Worked example
Say a team has 50 open opportunities, an average deal size of 20,000, a 25 percent win rate, and a 50-day sales cycle. Velocity is 50 x 20,000 x 0.25 / 50 = 5,000 per day.
If the team shortens the cycle to 40 days and changes nothing else, velocity rises to 6,250 per day. These figures are illustrative only.
The four levers
- Opportunities: Create more qualified pipeline, from outbound, inbound, or partners.
- Deal size: Sell to larger accounts, bundle products, or price by usage or seats.
- Win rate: Qualify harder, improve discovery, and focus on accounts that fit your ICP.
- Cycle length: Remove friction such as slow legal review, late stakeholder involvement, or unclear next steps.
How to use it
Track it by segment
Calculate velocity per segment, product, or rep team. A blended number hides the fact that enterprise deals and small-business deals behave differently.
Test one lever at a time
Change one input, wait a full cycle, and compare. If you change several at once, you will not know what worked.
Common mistakes
- Counting unqualified opportunities: This inflates the first input and makes velocity look better than reality.
- Mixing deal types: Renewals and new business belong in separate calculations.
- Chasing one lever: Pushing for faster closes can lower win rate or deal size.
Sales velocity FAQs
What is sales velocity?
Sales velocity is a metric showing how quickly your pipeline converts into revenue. It combines the number of opportunities, average deal size, win rate, and sales cycle length into a single revenue-per-day figure.
How do you calculate sales velocity?
Multiply the number of qualified opportunities by average deal size and win rate, then divide by sales cycle length in days. The result is the revenue your pipeline produces per day. Use the same time period for every input.
How can you increase sales velocity?
Raise any of the four inputs: create more qualified opportunities, grow average deal size, improve win rate, or shorten the sales cycle. Improve one at a time so you can see which change moved the number.
Is sales velocity the same as pipeline velocity?
In most teams, yes. Both terms usually describe the same formula of opportunities, deal size, win rate, and cycle length. Some teams use pipeline velocity for stage-to-stage movement speed, so check how your team defines it.
